Live events attendees won’t see soaring prices on the secondary market
The government is expected to move ahead with plans to ban the resale of tickets to live events for profit, in a move aimed at tackling touts and resale platforms that offer tickets at significantly above face value.
According to widespread reports this morning, ministers are understood to be preparing an announcement that would set a legal limit on resale prices at the original face value, with some additional fees still permitted.
The proposal follows a consultation on whether to cap resale prices at up to 30 per cent above face value, but reports suggest the government will adopt a stricter approach. The move was among the Labour Party’s election commitments and has gained increased attention after dozens of musicians, including Sam Fender, Dua Lipa and Coldplay, wrote to the Prime Minister urging action.
Expect further details in the near future – including implementation plans and specific stipulations.
Resale platforms such as Viagogo and StubHub have argued that price caps could drive users to unregulated sites and social media, increasing the risk of fraud.
