The show will reach a whole nation!
A new UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar will open in Manchester in 2027, with Sam Ryder set to play the role of Jesus.
The production, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, will begin performances at the Palace Theatre, Manchester from 11 February 2027 before visiting venues across the UK and Ireland. We’ve listed the announced dates on a dedicated tour page.
The tour follows runs at the London Palladium, where it is currently playing until 5 September 2026, and a subsequent engagement at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from October 2026 to January 2027.
Directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt, the staging reunites the creative team behind the 2016 Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production. The creative team also includes musical supervisor Tom Deering, lighting designer Lee Curran, sound designer Adam Fisher, wigs, hair and makeup designers Sam Cox and Maria Johal, fight director Kate Waters and casting directors Grindrod Burton Casting.
Jesus Christ Superstar follows the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas and features songs including “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, “Gethsemane,” and “Superstar”.
Producer Michael Harrison said “We are absolutely delighted that Jesus Christ Superstar will embark on a major UK tour following the phenomenal response to this extraordinary new production. The tremendous buzz generated by Saturday night’s first performance at The London Palladium underlines just how special this iconic musical remains, and we are thrilled that audiences across the country will now have the opportunity to experience Tim Sheader’s visionary staging, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary score, and Sam Ryder’s electrifying performance.
“This is fantastic news for touring theatre and audiences throughout the UK, ensuring that this remarkable production can be enjoyed by many more people following our seasons at The London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane.”
The musical was first released as an album before transferring to Broadway in 1971. The original London production ran for more than eight years.
Casting beyond Ryder is to be announced.
