Grindr: The Opera will return to London in a new production prior to a UK tour.
Directed and choreographed by William Spencer, the musical describes itself as “putting the most notorious gay hook-up app into the exaggerated world of opera.”
The musical styles range from baroque to pop, with music and lyrics by Erik Ransom. He said: “Class and crass were the elements I sought to blend in the creation of this show. It is right in the title: Grindr: The Opera…”
Continuing: “I hope you’ll lose yourself in this eclectic musical world, which is frequently as frivolous as Figaro and at times as tragic as Tosca. I hope you’ll take differing sides in the disputes between the characters, because in my view, there are no heroes or villains in this story. Grindr is neither good nor bad. It is, like its trademarked sigil, a mask. A guise to be donned by myriad men for a plethora of purposes. However you receive Grindr: The Opera, may you find it at least as enjoyable as your most recent hook up!”
Set to star are Christian Lunn (The Rocky Horror Show), who featured in the original 2018 cast and the 2023 revival cast, and Dereck Walker, who also appeared in 2023. Further casting is to be announced.
It is designed by David Shields and has casting by Daniel Lobo, with Aaron Clingham as musical director and Peter Bull as producer.
Grindr: The Opera will play at Union Theatre from 18 June to 19 July, before visiting Birmingham’s The Old Rep from 28 July to 2 August, Manchester’s 53two from 5 to 29 August, Liverpool’s Unity Theatre from 1 to 5 September, and Nottingham Arts Theatre from 10 to 12 September.
